Electronic Musical Instrument with Strumplate, OM-108-U Omnichord

Released in 1981, this electronic musical instrument features an automatic accompaniment function (auto bass/chord) and a harp sensor. By pressing a chord button and sliding a finger across the harp sensor (strumplate), an arpeggio matching the chord is produced, enabling anyone to easily accompany a song. No prior musical experience or knowledge of staff notation is required. Only the chord names needed to play a song—a method commonly known as "tab"—are necessary. Combined with its portability, this device became extremely popular, especially in Europe and America, as a new musical instrument that anyone could enjoy anywhere. Additionally, due to its unique electronic sounds reminiscent of the 1980s and the tactile way musical expressions are achieved, it has developed cult status worldwide. It appears not only in recorded music but also in publicity photos and has been featured in song and album titles. The product name was discontinued after the OM-300 (released in 1996), but its popularity as a unique musical instrument has endured. Now, over 40 years later, it returns with the OM-108.
